To set up Medicare, ensure you’re eligible (typically age 65 or older). You’ll need your Social Security number, proof of age, and citizenship or residency status. Part A is automatic and B is not. If not automatically enrolled, sign up through the Social Security Administration. You can enroll online, by phone, or in person.
Social Security National Number: (800) 772-1213
You have a 7-month window to sign up for Medicare. This includes the 3 months before your 65th birthday to automatically get plans A and B, the month of your birthday, and the 3 months after. It's best to enroll early to ensure your coverage starts on time. A $0 premium Medicare Advantage plan might seem appealing, but it often comes with limitations such as higher deductibles, higher co-pays, or restricted formularies. These plans may not cover all your medications or may require higher out-of-pocket costs for certain drugs. It's important to carefully review the plan details, including the coverage and costs associated with your medications, to ensure it meets your needs effectively.
To get a Medicare drug plan (Part D), you'll need to be enrolled in Medicare Part A and/or Part B. Then, choose a plan that covers your medications by comparing options on the Medicare website or contacting an insurance provider directly. Once you've selected a plan, you can enroll online, by phone, or through an online application (Right Above). Be sure to have your Medicare number and a list of your current medications handy when signing up.
